Explore Southern Utah in 2017 – January and February
I mentioned in my last article that my family and I have a goal this year to take advantage of the incredible world immediately surrounding St George by exploring Southern Utah in 2017. As I’m a little behind my first post will combine what we did in January and February.
January:
The weather in January was still a little cold so we decided to mostly stay indoors this month.
Rosenbruch World Wildlife Museum
This museum is located in St George and is attached to the St George convention center. It’s a two-story exhibit of stuffed exotic animals and bugs from all over the world. All in all, it was a fun experience and something new for the kids but I felt it was over-priced and would draw a lot more people if they’d cut the cost in half but still worth at least one trip if you have kids.
The Children’s Museum isn’t new to us but definitely a family favorite. It’s located right in the center of town. It has two levels of games and activities designed for learning and a lot of fun. Just outside of the museum is one of the best splash pads in town. So if you go to the museum bring swimming suites and get a little sun too.
February:

Our Trip to the Glitter Mountain Gypsum Mine
The Gypsum mine is located just a few miles southeast of St George Airport. You’ll take a dirt road which goes through a wash which depending on the time of year could have a foot or two of water which makes getting there a bit of an adventure so be careful. The mine is a large hole with exposed Gypsum that is quite beautiful and sparkling on a sunny day. Take a few mining tools like a hammer and a strong pick or screwdriver if you want to take home some souvenirs.
Don’t come to Southern Utah without seeing Zion National Park. It is one of America’s true natural gems. I personally rank it up there with Yosemite and the Grand Canyon. But keep in mind that word has gotten out and the park is flooded with tourists throughout the summer months and even in the off-season it’s becoming quite popular. Zion has hikes that fit everyone from toddlers to extreme risk-takers, trails such as the world-famous Angel’s Landing that has sheer 1,000-foot drops on both sides of the trail to the top. This time around our family chose to visit one of the amazing waterfalls, we’ll save angel’s landing until I can trust my son not to run off a cliff.
