Have you ever heard of a Tax Abatement? Most counties in the United States offer what’s called a
property tax abatement. For those that qualify this means they pay reduced property tax amounts and
many don’t pay anything at all.
Who Qualifies?
Every county is different but in general Property Tax Abatements are granted for people in one of three
groups:
- Low to moderate income – don’t let this fool you. you might not think you’re in a low income
bracket but retirees live on fixed incomes which by comparison are considered low income as
compared to those still in the workforce. - Veterans – Again it depends on the county but most counties will offer abatements for any
veteran whether or not they also have a service related disability rating. - Disabilities – People who suffer from various disabilities may also qualify for abatements.
Why do they do this?
The warm and fuzzy answer to this question is because counties want to take care of their citizens.
Possibly a more accurate answer would be that property taxes usually come due around election season
and elected officials know Veterans and Retirees have the highest voting percentages.
Who do I call?
The County Assessor’s office is normally the office you want to call. Tell them you want to apply for a
property tax abatement and they will send you the application or direct you to their website to apply.
Is it worth it?
I’m often surprised at who qualifies for tax abatements. Most counties are pretty flexible on awarding
this so it is worth a 20 minute application to save yourself hundreds to thousands of dollars a year.
